YWAM Soroti is located in the Eastern Region of Uganda and was established on November 18, 1988. At that time, the region was experiencing an insurgency as rebel groups fought against the National Resistance Movement (NRM), which had overthrown the Obote II government. This conflict led to significant loss of life and widespread poverty. The first YWAM Soroti base leader was the late Alphonse from Jinja. During these critical years of war, MedAir, a humanitarian organization responding to crises and emergencies, was actively involved in relief efforts. They carried out various interventions to mitigate the effects of the war on the local population.

By 1989, as the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) conflict began to subside and the region stabilized, MedAir determined that the area was no longer in a state of emergency and needed to transition out. At that time, Youth With A Mission (YWAM) was already present in Uganda, with a base in Jinja. The leaders of MedAir approached YWAM and asked them to consider establishing a ministry in Soroti. After prayerful consideration, YWAM Uganda leadership felt it was the right time to begin work in the region. Later in 1989, YWAM Uganda sent a team to Soroti. The team engaged in relief and development programs in collaboration with local authorities.
